The Director, Academic Sales position is highly dependent upon the ability to make a human connection with clients to develop a mutually beneficial relationship. The Director will be quite familiar with the mental health crisis taking place on school campuses and passionate about improving access to mental health support for students and faculty nationwide.
The Director will have a deep understanding of the US academic market including budgeting process and cycle. This consultative sales role focuses on developing new business opportunities and selling solutions throughout the 9-12 and higher education markets.

Counslr is a B2B digital mental health platform providing 24/7/365 text-based mental health support to students and employees at various organizations including schools, corporations, and nonprofits. Covered users are able to engage in an unlimited number of live chat sessions with licensed counselors, on-demand or by scheduled appointment, within the Counslr mobile app. Counslr’s mission is to better reach the traditionally unreachable (those who need support but do not or cannot seek it).
Job Responsibilities
Work in concert with the executive team to lead and facilitate strategies and action plans for academic markets.
Prospect for key individuals at targeted academic institutions and run cold outreach campaigns to establish meetings with leadership.
Cultivate and expand existing partnerships through a cadence of communication and executive/senior level client visits to develop new opportunities
Ask insightful questions, actively listen, and offer solutions that align with the challenges and goals of educational institutions.
Negotiate and communicate complex concepts/business issues verbally and in writing to clients, consultants, and management.
Develop market insights and other analytical insights to formulate clear and compelling strategic sales priorities.
Based on a solid understanding of market developments (economic, research, etc.) and customer needs, create, prioritize and actively pursue concrete opportunities.
Develop a deep understanding of win and loss reasons to drive sales behavior and results grounded in analytics and metrics.
Comfortable traveling and effectively networking at industry events.
Maintain accurate and consistent prospect and client pipeline within HubSpot.
Collaborate with the marketing and product teams to develop a strategic go-to-market plan with clear sales priorities.
Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities/projects.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in new business development and sales in academic markets.
- Proven ability to cultivate and develop relationships resulting in signed contracts.
- Ability to effectively manage a long sales cycle while keeping multiple stakeholders engaged.
- Ability to develop a human connection with client through active listening, asking insightful questions and storytelling.
- Experience developing sales forecasts, pipelines, analytics, contracting, pricing, and strategy.
- Experience in account penetration, business presentation and marketing.
- Experience building out a go-to-market process for a new product and/or new service.
- Experience with Google Workspace, Slack, Calendly, Hubspot.
Desired Qualifications
- Pre-existing relationships with decision makers at relevant academic institutions.
- Familiarity with digital health services and their associated nuances.
- Experience generating in-bound customer interest through social media.
